For Physicians

Architecting Your Medical Career

OSMD gives physicians another way to practice medicine: one designed around flexibility, autonomy, continuity, long-term hospital relationships, and access to professional infrastructure that can make independent practice more sustainable.

How Is OSMD Different?

How Is OSMD Different?

Hospital Employment

Hospital employment can offer organizational integration, employee benefits, predictable systems, and a traditional career structure. For many physicians, it is an appropriate and attractive practice model.

Other physicians may want greater autonomy, flexibility, or control over how they structure their professional lives.

OSMD exists as another option. The purpose of the comparison is not to suggest that hospital employment is inherently inferior, but to help physicians understand how the models differ.

How Is OSMD Different?

Traditional Locums

Traditional locums can serve physicians who want temporary assignments, supplemental work, or the flexibility to move among facilities.

OSMD is designed for a different purpose. OSMD opportunities are built around long-term, recurring hospital relationships in which participating physicians contract directly with hospitals.

The objective is greater continuity and the opportunity for physicians to become familiar with the hospital, clinical teams, leadership, medical staff, and community.

How Is OSMD Different?

Independent Contracting on Your Own

Independent practice can provide substantial professional autonomy.

Physicians contracting entirely on their own, however, may also need to identify opportunities and independently coordinate malpractice, insurance, credentialing, administrative support, banking, lending, financial resources, and other aspects of independent practice.

OSMD combines long-term clinical opportunities with access to a broader physician-support ecosystem and professional community.

How Is OSMD Different?

The OSMD Model

OSMD is designed for physicians seeking both independence and continuity.

OSMD develops long-term opportunities in which participating physicians enter into standardized physician agreements directly with hospitals. Physicians can develop recurring relationships with the same organizations while having access to a broader professional-support ecosystem.

The specific responsibilities, compensation, clinical expectations, and hospital requirements vary by opportunity and are discussed directly with physicians considering a particular program.

Access to a Broader Professional Network

These services are attractive to physicians in their own right, but they also help explain why an OSMD-related opportunity may feel more complete than a simple shift-based arrangement.

  • Tax-aware and estate-planning resources through independent professionals
  • Business/entity and asset-protection resources through independent professionals
  • Other professional services relevant to independent practice

Medical Malpractice

Medical Malpractice Support

Medical malpractice can be a practical barrier when hospitals develop direct relationships with independent physicians.

OSMD maintains relationships with independent malpractice providers that may offer physician-focused coverage options to affiliated physicians. This provides another resource physicians can evaluate as they establish a long-term relationship with a hospital.

OSMD does not underwrite malpractice insurance or guarantee that a particular policy is suitable for an individual physician. Coverage, limits, premiums, policy structure, exclusions, and other terms are determined by the independent provider.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance Resources

Independent physicians may need alternatives to traditional employer-sponsored health benefits.

Through independent third-party relationships, OSMD-affiliated physicians may have access to health insurance resources that they can evaluate for themselves and their families.

Eligibility, networks, premiums, deductibles, benefits, exclusions, and other coverage terms are determined independently by the provider. OSMD does not underwrite health insurance or guarantee eligibility, pricing, coverage, or suitability.

Wealth Architecture

One Organization. Multiple Disciplines. One Ongoing Strategy.

Through an independent third-party relationship, OSMD-affiliated physicians may have access to a multidisciplinary wealth-architecture organization that coordinates professionals who might otherwise work separately.

Depending on the physician’s needs, the team may include financial planners, CPAs, attorneys, insurance specialists, investment professionals, business and entity specialists, retirement-plan professionals, banking resources, and other advisors.

The approach is designed to function more like an ongoing personal CFO relationship than a one-time financial plan, with professionals communicating around a coordinated long-term strategy.

OSMD does not provide legal, tax, investment, insurance, estate-planning, asset-protection, or financial advice.

Credentialing & Onboarding

Credentialing & Onboarding Support

Physician recruitment does not end when a physician agrees to join a program. Credentialing, medical staff applications, documentation, and onboarding can create substantial administrative work for both the hospital and physician.

OSMD provides credentialing and onboarding support for OSMD-related opportunities to help organize and move that process forward.

Physicians remain responsible for completing required applications, providing documentation, maintaining licenses and certifications, and meeting hospital, medical staff, and regulatory requirements.

Physician Logistics

Physician Logistics

Building a sustainable physician relationship sometimes requires practical logistical support beyond the clinical role itself.

Where appropriate, OSMD can coordinate certain logistics associated with an OSMD physician opportunity. The specific arrangements depend on the hospital, geography, physician, and clinical program.

Administrative Support

Administrative Support for Independent Practice

Sustainable physician relationships require more than a contract and a clinical schedule.

OSMD provides or coordinates certain administrative functions associated with OSMD opportunities and helps physicians navigate the practical requirements of joining a hospital program. This may include credentialing support, onboarding coordination, communication, and other administrative assistance associated with the physician relationship.

Additional professional resources may be offered by independent third-party organizations.

Coverage Is Not the Same as Control

Medical malpractice insurance protects a physician’s license, reputation, career, and financial interests. Some hospitals provide malpractice coverage, but physicians should understand what the policy actually does and whose interests it protects.

  • Who is insured
  • Coverage limits
  • Locations covered
  • Occurrence vs. claims-made
  • Tail requirements
  • Legal defense provisions
  • Whether coverage follows the physician across relationships
  • What happens if physician and hospital interests diverge
  • Settlement control

Through an independent third-party relationship, OSMD-affiliated physicians may have access to physician-focused malpractice options. OSMD does not underwrite insurance or guarantee the suitability of a policy.

Wealth Architecture

One Organization. Multiple Disciplines. One Ongoing Strategy.

Through an independent third-party relationship, affiliated physicians may access a comprehensive wealth architecture organization that brings multiple disciplines together under one coordinated platform, similar to a personal CFO-like model.

The professionals may meet and communicate regularly, reassessing the physician’s financial structure over time. Depending on the program, services may involve ongoing subscriptions, technology-enabled planning tools, and coordinated long-term strategy. These services are not provided by OSMD; physicians independently evaluate the professionals, services, fees, risks, and benefits.

  • Certified Financial Planners and financial professionals
  • CPAs and tax professionals
  • Attorneys and estate-planning professionals
  • Insurance specialists
  • Investment professionals
  • Business/entity specialists
  • Retirement-plan professionals
  • Banking and lending resources
  • Other specialists as needed

Long-Term Physician Relationships

Physician FAQs

Is OSMD a locums or temporary staffing company?

No.

OSMD is not designed around temporary assignments. OSMD is built around long-term, direct hospital-physician relationships in which physicians can return consistently to the same organizations and become part of the hospital’s clinical community.

How is OSMD different from hospital employment?

Hospital employment can offer benefits, organizational integration, and a traditional employment structure.

OSMD is designed for physicians who may prefer greater autonomy and flexibility while still developing meaningful long-term hospital relationships.

Neither model is right for every physician. They represent different approaches to structuring a medical career.

How is OSMD different from contracting on my own?

Physicians can contract independently without OSMD.

Doing so may require the physician to independently identify clinical opportunities and coordinate malpractice, credentialing, insurance, banking, administrative resources, and other aspects of independent practice.

OSMD combines long-term hospital opportunities with a broader physician-support ecosystem and professional community.

Can OSMD be my primary medical career?

Potentially, yes.

Some physicians may build a substantial or primary portion of their clinical practice around OSMD opportunities. Others may combine OSMD with academic medicine, administrative leadership, another clinical position, entrepreneurial work, or other professional commitments.

The appropriate arrangement depends on the physician’s specialty, goals, availability, and available opportunities.

Can I work with OSMD while maintaining another job?

In many circumstances, yes.

Whether a particular OSMD opportunity is compatible with another position depends on the requirements of the hospital relationship, the physician’s availability, existing contractual obligations, and the needs of the clinical program.

What specialties does OSMD currently work with?

Current OSMD service lines include Hospital Medicine; Pulmonary & Critical Care; Cardiology; Trauma Surgery; Primary Care; and Urgent Care.

Additional specialties may be evaluated as OSMD develops new long-term hospital relationships.

Will I work at the same hospital repeatedly?

That is generally the objective.

OSMD is built around continuity and recurring hospital relationships rather than one-time assignments. Physicians have the opportunity to become familiar with the hospital, clinical teams, medical staff, leadership, and community over time.

Does OSMD provide malpractice insurance?

OSMD does not underwrite medical malpractice insurance.

Through independent third-party relationships, affiliated physicians may have access to physician-focused malpractice coverage options that they can independently evaluate.

Why might I consider independent malpractice coverage?

The important question is not simply who pays the premium, but what the policy actually provides.

Physicians should understand who is insured, coverage limits, covered locations, occurrence versus claims-made structure, tail requirements, defense provisions, settlement authority, and what happens if the physician’s interests differ from those of another insured party.

Independent coverage can provide another option for physicians who want greater visibility into their professional liability protection.

Does OSMD provide health insurance?

No.

OSMD does not underwrite health insurance. Through independent third-party relationships, affiliated physicians may have access to health insurance resources they can evaluate independently.

Eligibility, networks, premiums, benefits, deductibles, and coverage terms are determined by the provider.

Can OSMD help with banking, credit, or physician mortgages?

OSMD maintains relationships with independent financial institutions that may offer physician-focused banking, business banking, lending, lines of credit, and physician mortgage programs.

All underwriting, credit decisions, rates, fees, eligibility requirements, and terms are determined independently by the financial institution.

What is wealth architecture?

Wealth architecture is a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to long-term financial planning.

Through an independent third-party relationship, OSMD-affiliated physicians may have access to an organization that brings together financial planners, CPAs, attorneys, insurance professionals, investment professionals, business and entity specialists, retirement-plan professionals, and other advisors.

The goal is to coordinate these disciplines around one ongoing strategy rather than have each professional operate independently.

Does OSMD provide tax, legal, investment, or wealth-planning advice?

No.

OSMD does not provide legal, tax, investment, insurance, banking, estate-planning, asset-protection, or financial advice.

Those services are provided independently by third-party professionals who establish their own relationships with participating physicians.

Do I have to use OSMD’s third-party partners?

Generally, no.

Most third-party professional resources are optional. Physicians may continue using their own attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, insurance professionals, banks, and other providers.

If a specific hospital opportunity has a particular requirement, that requirement would be disclosed separately.

What credentialing support does OSMD provide?

OSMD provides credentialing and onboarding support for OSMD-related opportunities.

Physicians remain responsible for providing required documentation, completing applications, maintaining licenses and certifications, and satisfying applicable medical staff, hospital, and regulatory requirements.

How is compensation determined?

OSMD collaborates with the hospital to establish an appropriate hourly compensation rate for the physician opportunity.

Fair market value serves as the starting point, with additional consideration given to costs and benefits that may not be fully reflected in traditional MGMA compensation assumptions, including items such as paid time off, payroll taxes, and other employer-related expenses.

Once OSMD and the hospital agree upon the hourly compensation rate, OSMD markets the opportunity to qualified physicians.

Participating physicians enter into a standardized physician agreement directly with the hospital, creating consistency within the program while preserving the direct hospital-physician relationship.

How do I learn about current opportunities?

Contact OSMD and tell us about your specialty, board certification, states of licensure, geographic interests, availability, and professional goals.

OSMD can then determine whether a current or developing hospital relationship aligns with the type of long-term medical career you want to build.
